Rachmaninov Prelude c-sharp minor - Amateur version
Recorded in 1985 when I was 23 years old. I was in love with this piece and later until now I got hybris and studied only the most demanding music for piano. It was maybe a mistake but at the same time rewarding!

Bach JS Goldbervariations 1-20 - From an amateurs point of view.
Просмотров 6514 дней назад
I early realized that Bach was not my bag. So I have only played the Italian concerto the Goldberg variations. This is the recording I like the least. Tempo, phrasing, pedaling, performace.. everything is missing. So why then publish it? It is for amateurs who want to compare, not only with the greatest pianists.

I got inspired to learn this by a live recording by Emil Gilels. It got stuck in my mind and I simply couldn´t resist to practise it. I think it was in 1988. A year later I actually performed the piece to some other amateurs. Still, it doesn´t sound good. Maybe the finale is the best.
Liszt sonata b minor - played by an amateur

I started to practise this in 1990 as a present to my father who celebrated his 70th birthday in 1992. I think he appreciated it but he usually preferred softer classical piano music.

Piano music from an amateur (me). This one I recorded in 2013. Yes, it sounds terrible many times but I want to inspire (or rather discourage) amateurs from playing it. I played the entire piece but the last part was so brutally hard that I never made an attempt to record it.

There was a documentary about the Van Cliburn competition, where Olga Kern appeared practising Rach 3. I remember I thought that if she can play it, why shouldn´t I? Hybris... I first learned the first movement which I unintentionally performed to students writing some exame in a big hall. I didn´se or hear them but no one complained. I regret I never recorded it. Franz Liszt - Sonata B minor - Liszt´s HANDWRITING

Played by Evgeny Kissin at the Verbier festival in 2011. The handwriting include bars that were deleted by the composer. These are shown last in the video. Interestingly, the conclusion was originally thought as a grandiose finale but was replaced by an andante sostenuto, fading away to ppp.

This is an old tape recording from a recital with Murray Perahia. There is some background noise but it is in my opinion still the best performance of this sonata I have heard so I just had to upload it. I didn´t use any noise reduction since it cuts frequences from the piano. There is only some slight use of the equalizer.

Although I´m a fan of Yeol, I would like to recommend or make a point for a faster version of the Adagio, which is played by Gulda. This Adagio is absurdly long and seems to lose itself constantly, roaming about aimlessly. It is hard for me to listen through it and to keep an "overview" or to keep track of a context. Gulda keeps this piece more compact with his faster and straight forward style of playing, making it better digestible. I think he also has a lighter touch at times, and then again more temper, creating a bit more contrast, which also helps to keep track with and connect the musical ideas of this Adagio. Gulda has a softer sound overall, he seems to play a different piano, maybe a Bösendorfer. If I´m not mistaken, here we have a Steinway, and although I love the piano in Jazz, I think its sound is to hard or brilliant for this Adagio. Of course there could be other reasons for this, like for instance the recording techniques, so please correct me if I'm wrong about the pianos.

I don’t think he was disappointed but never heard him talk about it. Both he and my mother listened a lot to piano music but we rarely met to talk music after I moved to another city.

Hello, I'm 24 now turning 25 soon-ish, and currently practicing this piece but there's still a long way to go. This is certainly much better than what I can do, and probably quite a lot of other fellow hobby piano players too. Even if it is for my sake, I don't think any amateurs can be called a failure.

With time you will learn. What you will need is passion for the piece an endurance I think I will change the end of the title to ”what could possibly go wrong”. Less self criticism.

Congratulations You are second only to Bruce (Xio) Lee. His fearlessness can carry anyone through of the wonder of his play of Franz Liszt's most difficult piece of piano music and it cannot be matched except maybe at the last part of your rendition of this piece. No other pianist can play this compostion with his unerrig accuracy of both beauty and necessary fast fingers. To play this ;piece at all it takes an utter fearlessness and a closest to the fastest finger speed possible!!

Yeol Eum Son is such a magnificent pianist. Everything I have ever heard her play has been exceptional for my taste. She has all the chops and then some yet she is wonderfully lyrical and is a master communicator at the piano. That said, everything was great here and then came the fugue. She takes it at way too fast a clip to the point of losing some musicality. Jorge Bolet used to say "nothing kills beautiful piano playing more than excessive speed". Of course, he could play as fast as anybody if he wanted to. A little more restraint in the fugue and I'd give it the highest marks.

Is this her arrangement? Too bad such questions are not answered in the description. Then again one would be chastised for worrying about such trivia when confronted with a performance as brilliant as this. I see in the sidebar that Yuja also does a performance of this movement. This should be interesting.

Yeol really captures the profound spirituality of this last solo piano sonata of Beethoven. And her trills? How can she trill that fast?! She's a precious artist and I look forward to more of her performances. Her 3 Pieces from Petrouchka of Stravinsky was utterly spellbinding. She is truly a pianistic giant.

It´s very interesting to listen a conductor talking to the pianist from the orchestra´s point of view, specially in a work based mostly on the piano part. Although the orchestra could seem to be not as difficult as in other works, both Chopin´s concertos demands a full understanding of the music flow, phrasing and rubato. Great job, both artists in a deep and mutual understanding of this beautiful piece of art.
